The SMURF (Sustainable Management models and valUe chains foR small Forests) project recently wrapped up its Fourth General Assembly from 23 to 25 September 2025 at the Campus Educative Bordeaux, graciously hosted by its French partner, XYLOFUTUR. This gathering brought together 22 participants from 10 consortium partners across Europe, who took the time to review the project’s progress, share insights, and strengthen their collaboration to push forward innovative and profitable solutions for small forest owners.

Laurus network celebrates the great success of its first webinar on voluntary carbon market and land use carbon projects in europe. The session, titled “The Voluntary Carbon Market and Land Use Carbon Projects in Europe”, with a total of 151 attendees —with 124 attending simultaneously— provided an overview of how forest owners and land managers can take advantage of carbon markets.


The successful conference brought together key stakeholders from across Europe and many Forest Owners’ Associations, who attended the launch of Laurus, a European network providing training and innovation for technical staff of forest owners’ organisations. 200 international forest experts debate at FAO-Rome solutions for forest land abandonment, low profitability and forest fragmentation in the EU.

From January 14-16, 2025, the SMURF project convened its 3rd General Assembly at the University of Florence’s Novoli Campus. This pivotal meeting gathered 22 people, from 10 project partners to review progress, outline upcoming activities, and prepare for the Second Cascade Funding Call and the First European Conference on Small Forest Holdings. The event also included a field trip to Monte Amiata in the Tuscany region

SMURF project opens its first cascade funding call, offering up to €200,000 to support associations of small forest owners. The initiative aims to gather key data on forest management across Europe and foster innovation networks for a more sustainable and resilient forest sector.

The SMURF project holds its second General Assembly from June 11 to 13, 2024. This event is taking place in Seinäjoki, Finland, as a side event to the 10th annual conference of the European Regions for Innovation in Agriculture, Food and Forestry network (ERIAFF).

SMURF was presented in Valladolid during the INNOVAForONE conference. Aiming to revitalise small-scale forest holdings, the project will connect forest stakeholders across Europe to promote innovation, sustainable management, and new business models that strengthen rural economies and preserve biodiversity.
